My Blend Book
An easy way to learn phonics and blending for ages 3 to 7
Phonemic awareness is the first step in learning to read ― My Blend Book is full beginning and ending sounds, word families and CVC* words they need to be able to sound out to be successful in kindergarten.
All you have to do is cut along the line on each page to make it easy to flip with confidence. This is an interactive way to practice blending words and letter sounds. Each book allows for nearly 2500 blends! Some will help with NWF* that is a major part of reading.
This first step in the blend books includes:
Initial Sounds A to Z ―Helps to learn the individual vowel and consonant sounds, the first part of learning to read fluently. I left the F out of this book, because when I made the first draft 10 years ago, they were reading too well, if you know what I mean! I've also included beginning blends (like "tr") and digraphs (like "sh").
40 Word Families―The blend book gradually increase in difficulty, beginning with letter sounds before introducing blends (like “st”) and digraphs (like “ch”).
2500 Blends ― How awesome?! This little blend book is packed with 2500 practice blends that will open doors to the world of reading!
CVC - consonant - vowel - consonant words
NWF - nonsense word fluency - being able to read the words correctly by sounds, even if the word itself is not a real word
This was so much fun to make, it’s like inserting Math into Reading. :-D I hope you enjoy it! I’m working on a few more of these that will be suitable for advanced readers. A Blending Book is made by blending the beginning, middle, and ending sounds of words and pseudo-words. This book enables young learners to create over 2000 such words, all from this little book! As we learn letters and sounds, we progress through other advanced books and more complex words lists.
Knowing how to approach those newer words comes from success at blending the basics. This book is inexpensive and easy to use, and super effective in teaching learners to blend their sounds into words. Perfect for guided groups, centers or home use - just for extra practice. My daughter likes to keep hers in the car and run through while we’re doing errands. It is important to be able to ‘blend’ the sounds to make words, in your mind. That helps to decode other words that you have never seen before. Having a hard time blending is is a tell tale sign of a struggling reader, and practicing a few minutes a day can easily remedy this issue.
